Ready to explore the best of the Sorrento Peninsula in just 3 days? Here’s how we packed our itinerary with some of the most breathtaking spots in the region. From the island of Capri to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, and the stunning Amalfi Coast, this trip was amazing. And if that's not enough, we even squeezed in some nighttime shopping for a little retail therapy.

We rented an apartment through VRBO in Sant’Agnello in the Sorrento peninsula. As a family of 5, we found staying in Sant’Agnello a little cheaper than staying in Sorrento, despite being just a short 10-minute drive away. Our apartment was conveniently located only a couple of blocks away from a breathtaking view perched above a dramatic cliff.

If you're planning a trip to the Naples area after exploring a major city like Rome, we highly suggest considering a stay in the Sorrento peninsula. Located just south of Naples, this coastal region offers a change of scenery from the bustling city. With its views of the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea and charming old town streets, Sorrento peninsula provides an idyllic escape from the urban frenzy.

Day 1: Capri Tour

Capri Tour. Blue Grotto.

From the Capri Tour

Taking a Capri Boat tour is definitely worth it and offers so much to explore. Our boat took us along the coastline of Sorrento, which had so many features to admire. One of the must-see attractions is the Blue Grotto, where you can witness the blue hues of the water firsthand.  But there are other grottos, too, such as White Grotto, the Green Grotto, and the Marvelous Grotto, offering their own distinct hues. During our tour, we also saw Faraglioni rocks and the Natural Arch. These limestone rock formations, shaped by thousands of years of erosion, offer some incredible photo opportunities, but also create a landscape that leaves you in awe.

We also saw the Villa Curzo Malaparte, an architectural gem that elegantly blends with its natural surroundings. Designed by the renowned Italian architect Adalberto Libera in the 1930s, perched atop a rugged cliff overlooking the ocean, this iconic structure is minimalist yet striking in design.

We passed the lighthouse of Punta Carena, built in 1866 and still an active lighthouse. We also stopped at Marina Grande beach where we soaked up the Mediterranean sun and dipped in the waters. Along the way, our particular boat anchored out in the ocean so we could jump off and swim and take in sights such as Punta Lagno where a small waterfall cascades down a rock face.

This was truly a wonderful trip – so make sure to pack your beach essentials because this day trip is an adventure! Soak in the sun, be awed by the wonders of nature, and take-in the warmth of the ocean.

Day 2: Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Mount Vesuvius Adventure

On our second full day in Sant’Agnello, we booked a tour (in advance) to visit the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.  I’ve always been fascinated with the history of the Roman Empire because it has left such an indelible mark in modern society from art to structural engineering, and just the many ingenious ways they improved life, including our calendar! Among the places I wanted to visit during our trip to Italy were Pompeii and Herculaneum (and if possible, Mt Vesuvius too). Both cities are ancient ruins that were completely buried during the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. They were initially discovered and unearthed during the 16th century completely preserved. Here lies a cultural history, uninterrupted.

Naples. Pompeii Tour. Herculaneum.

Pompeii

We hired a private car for the day to pick us up from our place in Sant’Agnello at 8:30am. Our driver took us to the Herculaneum in the morning, which we explored by ourselves, and we were at Pompeii just after 1pm, early enough to meet our 2pm tour guide. So, yes – it’s possible to do both of these places if you are squeezed for time, as we were. But, instead of hiring a private car like we did, just book these two tours together, which includes a pick-up and a drop-off at a convenient place in Sorrento and a transfer between the two sights.

Herculaneum. Pompeii. Naples.

With a tour guide in Pompeii, we explored the well-preserved ruins of this once-thriving city, getting a glimpse into what life was like during Roman times. Pompeii has been around since approximately 400 BC, you’ll find preserved villas and frescos, as well as the Forum, markets, and preserved private homes. You’ll even see some remains of those who perished during the volcanic eruption preserved in time by plaster molding. Look at the intricate mosaic tiles on the floors and on the walls.

Pompeii and Herculaneum serve as poignant reminders of both the destructive force of nature and the enduring legacy of a civilization lost. Strolling through the remarkably preserved streets, one can't help but be transported back in time, immersed in the daily life of Roman citizens. From the grandeur of the Pompeii Amphitheatre to the intricately detailed frescoes that adorn the once opulent villas, each crumbling structure tells a story of its own.

Pompeii. Herculaneum. Naples.

Also, if the heat is not over-bearing and you are still looking for more adventure, don't miss out on the opportunity to hike up Mount Vesuvius and take in the panoramic views from its summit. Join a guided tour and learn about its fascinating geology while venturing into its volcanic craters. It's an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of this natural wonder and truly appreciate its significance. Unfortunately, due to the heat, we reluctantly skipped this part.  We also do not recommend doing Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Mt. Vesuvius in one day.

So, whether you're fascinated by ancient history or seeking cultural understanding to immerse yourself in the past, a Herculaneum and Pompeii day trip is definitely worth considering.

Day 3: Private Boat Tour of the Amalfi Coast

Furre Fjord. Amalfi Coast.

Furore fjord.

On our last day in this area, we booked a private boat trip with a skipper along the spectacular Amalfi Coast. Coastal cliffs and vibrant colorful villas perched precariously on the rock formations.  Every corner of the Amalfi Coast seems straight out of a postcard. You can ask your skipper to dock the boat so you can take leisurely walks along the narrow streets of enchanting coastal villages like Positano and Amalfi.

Amalfi Coast.

Our boat docked for an unforgettable lunch on rustic weathered wooden boards at Conca dei Marini. The ambiance was pure rustic charm. This was an idyllic spot to savor not only the delicious flavors of the Mediterranean cuisine but also the amazing beauty surrounding us.

Along the way, we made many stops at different points of interest, either to view another geologic wonder or jump off the boat to swim.  We marveled at the rock formations around the isles of Gallo Lungo, La Castelluccia, and La Rotonda, known collectively as the Li Galli islands.  Legend has it that these isles were once the home of sirens who lured sailors with their irresistible songs. Gallo Lungo looks like a dolphin from aerial photographs. And we also discovered Furore fjord, just truly stunning. We anchored in the middle of the ocean to jump off on different swimming spots – Positano, Amalfi, Punta Germano, Sorrento, and Spiaggia di Conca dei Marini.

We highly recommend booking a private boat tour with your group to explore the Amalfi coast your way!

A second option is to take a half-day boat tour that offers viewing of the Amalfi coastline and stopping at beaches to swim and snorkel.

Night Time Exploration in Sorrento's Corso Italia

On one of the evenings, we went to Corso Italia in Sorrento, which is a vibrant and bustling shopping district. The Corso Italia promenade becomes a haven for leisurely strolling, where locals and tourists alike can wander and soak in the energy.  It is also a paradise for shopaholics, with its array of boutiques, charming shops, and delightful cafes. It was truly alive with so many tourists milling about from shop to shop.
