Travel Tips + Practicalities

Visa Requirement

Find your country of origin here to learn whether a visa is required to enter the Philippines and any other passport requirements.

Best Time To Visit

December - May during the dry season. Monsoon season is from June to November, August being the wettest month.

Private Transfers and Cars

We recommend hiring a private car for a full day if you want to be on your own time or agenda or if you are creating your own itinerary. Your hotel should be able to help you with airport transfers and help you secure a transfer to/from specific destinations, i.e. restaurants, shopping, etc. Tours you reserved should include a pick-up and drop-off at your hotel.

For transferring from Puerto Pricesa to El Nido or vice versa, we recommend hiring a private van. You can do a ride share or you can hire the full van privately.

Public Transportation

We do not recommend for you to take the jeepneys unless you are well versed on the routes. Taking the tricycles is just like a taxi, so totally fine and encouraged to experience the culture.

Car Rental

We generally do not recommend renting a car on your own especially since hiring a private car in the Philippines is economical. Driving in the Philippines is a bit helter-skelter, so drive at your own risk, but El Nido is not as bad as Manila, but there isn’t a need to rent a car especially if you’re scheduling tours. However, should you want to rent a car, you’ may use your valid driver’s license from your country for 90 days and it has to be in English. If your license is not written in the English language, then you will need to go to your local embassy to have it translated in English.

Currency

Philippine Peso

Tipping

The Filipinos always appreciate gratuities given that they do not make that much money. Tipping your tour guide $5 or €5 that’s been with you all day is a nice gesture and it goes a long way.

Language

Tagalog, Local Dialect, English. Most Filipinos speak English.

Plug Converter

Type A or Type B.  Type A has two prongs, while Type B has three prongs (one is a grounding pin).

BEACH AND ISLAND DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE DIFFERENT TOURS OFFERED IN EL NIDO.

TOUR A

This tour includes stops at these beaches and islands:  7 Commando Beach, Secret Lagoon, Big Lagoon, Payong Payong, and Shimizu Island.  Our highlights on this tour are the Secret Lagoon and the Big Lagoon. Check Tour A Availability.

7 Commando Beach was originally named Ipil Beach after the abundance of ipil trees (known for their beautiful yellow flowers). A change in its name happened after a small ship, named 7 Commando Beach, found itself stranded on the shores of this pristine beach for 15 days about forty yeas ago. As a result, the beach was renamed “Seven Commando Beach.” Today, this beach stands as one of the most sought-after destinations for travelers with its idyllic surroundings and crystal-clear waters, it offers the perfect setting for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, and indulging in a game of beach volleyball.

Secret Lagoon is a hidden gem that offers a distinct experience of accessing the lagoon by squeezing through a small rock opening that fits only 1 person at a time. There are 3 magnificent rock formations that greet you as you enter.

The Big Lagoon is a famous lagoon drawing travelers from far and wide. It has served as the backdrop for serval international events such as the movie “The Bourne Legacy” and the the Redbull International Cliff Diving Competition. Furthermore, it has also been selected as a photoshoot location for Miss Universe 2018.  The main activity here is kayaking, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the lagoon. It takes about 30-40 minutes to complete the scenic loop, including entering through a rocky shallow area that is flanked by amazing limestone rock formations.  It is a sanctuary for a variety of marine life, including baby black tip sharks, turtles, and numerous fish species.  On your return journey, make sure to make a stop at the shallow area near the lagoon's entrance. Here, you can take a refreshing swim or simply marvel at the iconic view before bidding farewell to this extraordinary destination.

Payong Payong Beach, also known as Umbrella Beach, is a stunning destination located in front of Miniloc Resort, which is owned by Ayala, the largest land developer in the Philippines. The name Umbrella Beach comes from the unique rock formation resembling an umbrella. This picturesque beach is the perfect spot for a relaxing lunch, as the calm waters create a tranquil atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the area, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of nature. Another convenience is the presence of a floating vending kayak for purchasing of drinks and snacks.

The boats approach the island with their fronts facing the main entrance of the fascinating cave, allowing for photographs to be taken. The entire experience on Cathedral Cave lasts for approximately 15 minutes.

Cudugnon Cave, located in the mainland of Palawan, and it offers visitors a glimpse into the trading activities of the area a thousand years ago, as told by the locals. It has become renowned for its impressive collection of fossils, including bronze necklaces, jars, and even human bones, some of which are now displayed in the Palawan Museum. As you enter the cave, you'll be greeted by a small opening, just enough for one person to enter at a time. Main activity is swimming through the opening and seeing the inside of the cave. Located on Tapiutan Island, Talisay Beach is a popular spot for the tour to take visitors for a relaxing lunch during their trip. El Nido Island Hopping Tours.

Shimizu Island

Matinloc Shrine, situated on Matinloc Island, derives its name from the local term "Matinlo," which means "Beautiful." Formerly an abandoned church, this is a private place overseen by a caretaker who collects an entrance fee of 200 pesos per person. The main highlight of Matinloc Shrine is the breathtaking view from a viewpoint atop a rock, where visitors can marvel at the stunning landscapes of Tapyutan and Matinloc Island. TOUR D

Island and beach stops: Bukal Beach, Small Lagoon, Cadlao Lagoon, Pansandingan Beach, and Paradise Beach. Check Tour D Availability.

Bukal Beach is near Cadlao Island. It is a small beach with a reef garden. Only a few boats come to this beach, so it is a quieter place. The main activity here is snorkeling and sunbathing.

The Small Lagoon is undoubtedly the highlight of Tour D. In a concerted effort to reduce overcrowding, the local government made the mandate to separate the Small Lagoon from the Big Lagoon tour back in 2017. This reduces the number of people allowed in the area. Only a maximum of 500 people are allowed to visit the Small Lagoon each day. The main activity here is kayaking, as guests paddle their way through the striking limestone cliffs that surround the lagoon. You can also snorkel here.

El Nido Island Hopping Tours

Cadlao Lagoon, derived from the local Cuyunon dialect, means "laughing," is a hidden gem in the Philippines. With a friendly buko (coconut) vendor, visitors can indulge in refreshing coconut water as they soak up the sun. The highlight of Cadlao Lagoon is undoubtedly its breathtaking viewpoint. From here, one can admire the sight of boats gracefully floating on the lagoon's entrance, accompanied by stunning rock formations and natural bonsai trees. Besides its scenic beauty, this spot is perfect for kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming.

Pansandingan Beach, is in the Cadlao Island. It has nice rock formations. Snorkelers can explore the vibrant reef, while those seeking solace can unwind on the pristine white beach. There’s also a cave you can enter with another secret lagoon that has a combination of fresh and salt water, which makes the water a bit cooler. There's also a bar on this beach.
